The University of the West of England (abbrev. UWE, often pronounced "you-we") is a university based in the English city of Bristol. Its main campus is at Frenchay, about five miles (8 km) north of the city centre. UWE also has a smaller campus at St Matthias, a School of Health and Social Care at Glenside in north-east Bristol and the School of Creative Arts, located at Bower Ashton Campus, near Ashton Court in south-west Bristol. |

The university is the recent successor of a large number of merged and name-changed institutions of further and higher education[4]. Its history began with the Mechanics Institute founded in 1834: a date which makes it amongst the oldest (of non-ancient) universities in England. From 1992, Cheltenham & Gloucester College of Higher Education (CGCHE) was permitted to award first and postgraduate degrees and 1998 it achieved Research degree awarding powers. The University of Bristol is a university in Bristol, England. It received its Royal Charter in 1909, although its predecessor institution, University College, Bristol, had been in existence since 1876. It is one of the original "red brick" universities. Bristol ranks as one of the top 10 universities in the United Kingdom according to most published league tables and receives more applications per place than any other British University. The University has an annual turnover of £260m and is the largest independent employer in Bristol. |

The University of Bath is a campus university located in Bath, England. It received its Royal Charter in 1966. The University has established a strong reputation in teaching and research, being consistently placed as one of the top elite universities in national university league tables. With 23 out of its 26 subjects being ranked within top 10 in the UK, Bath is placed the 6th in the table of Who's in Top Ten of Their Subjects from the Complete University Guide published by The Independent in April 2008. In addition according to the Sunday Times University Guide, published in September 2008, Bath is ranked the 10th nationally. Furthermore, in the latest Research Assessment Exercise released in December 2008, two thirds of Bath's individual subject submissions are ranked in the top ten nationally, including over a third in the top five. |
