University of Salford
The University of Salford is based in Salford, Lancashire, England, with approximately 20,000 registered students. The main campus is about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) west of Manchester city centre, opposite the Working Class Movement Library and situated in 60 acres (240,000 m2) of parkland, "a haven of lawns and shrubberies", on the banks of the River Irwell. The university has established a successful global presence, with some 3,000 international students choosing to study there with significant numbers coming from China, India, Pakistan, Cyprus, Greece, Nigeria, the Irish Republic and Malaysia. With its four faculties, twelve schools, thirteen research institutes, nearly 20,000 students, and over 2,500 staff, Salford had a turnover of some £156m in 2006/07 and has placed itself strongly in serving the needs of industry and commerce. The University of Salford is on the leading edge of research innovation in many fields, including virtual reality, magnetics and optics, genetic algorithms, building design and prosthetics. The university is also a founding member of the Northern Consortium.
 
Manchester Metropolitan University
Manchester Metropolitan University is a university based in the city of Manchester, England. It is the fifth largest university in the United Kingdom after the Open University, the University of London, University of Manchester and Leeds Metropolitan University. The University now has over 21,000 full-time and 10,000 part-time students locally known as metties. As of 2005[update], there are hundreds of courses in over 70 subjects. It maintains five campuses in Manchester, as well as two in Crewe and Alsager in Cheshire. The university is currently selling off its smaller campuses and moving them to the larger sites at All Saints and Crewe, and a new campus neighbouring All Saints in Hulme.
 
University of Central Lancashire
The University of Central Lancashire (or UCLan) is a university based in Preston, UK, which until January 2007 had additional campuses in Carlisle and Penrith. Before 1992, the University had been Preston Polytechnic since September 1, 1973, and then Lancashire Polytechnic in 1984. Before then it was Harris College and previously The Harris Institute. Before that, it was originally named The Institution For The Diffusion Of Useful Knowledge. Colleges of education were added in the 1970s from Poulton-le-Fylde and Chorley. On 1 August 2004, UCLan took control of the former Northumbria University campus in Carlisle, which had around 400 students. Today, UCLan also validates degree courses for partner institutions. The Carlisle campus along with the university's Newton Rigg campus near Penrith, Cumbria have been part of the new University of Cumbria since the 1 August 2007.
